Ingredients:

  • 2 Tablespoons Coarse Sea Salt or Kosher Salt
  • 1 Tablespoon Granulated Sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Blood Orange Zest (freshly grated)
  • 1 Lime wedge (for wetting the rim)
  • 4 fluid ounces Blanco/Silver Tequila (100% Agave brand)
  • 3 fluid ounces Fresh Blood Orange Juice (strained to remove pulp)
  • 1 1/2 fluid ounces Cointreau (or high-quality Triple Sec)
  • 1 fluid ounce Fresh Lime Juice
  • 1/2 fluid ounce Agave Nectar or Simple Syrup
  • 2 Thin Blood Orange Wheels or Wedges (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Prep the Rim: On a small plate, combine the sea salt, granulated sugar, and blood orange zest. Mix thoroughly. Run a lime wedge around the outer edge of two serving glasses, then dip the moistened rim lightly into the salt mixture, rotating carefully to coat evenly. Set the glasses aside.
  2. Combine and Chill Ingredients: Juice the blood oranges and limes separately, ensuring all juices are freshly strained. Fill the cocktail shaker halfway with fresh ice cubes. Measure and pour the tequila, blood orange juice, Cointreau, lime juice, and agave nectar (or simple syrup) into the shaker.
  3. The Proper Shake: Secure the shaker lid tightly. Shake vigorously for a minimum of 15 to 20 seconds until the outside of the shaker becomes heavily frosted, ensuring maximum chilling and proper dilution.
  4. Strain and Serve: Double-strain the cocktail mixture into the prepared glasses, ensuring the ice from the shaker stays behind. Add fresh ice to the glass if serving on the rocks. Garnish each drink with a thin blood orange wheel or wedge placed directly on the rim.
