Ingredients:

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup dark rum or bourbon (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs and sugar until the mixture is pale and creamy.
  2. In a saucepan, combine the milk and heavy cream and heat over medium heat until just below a simmer.
  3. Gradually pour a small amount of the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture while whisking continuously to temper the eggs.
  4. Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens slightly (about 10 minutes).
  5. Remove from the heat, stir in vanilla extract, nutmeg, and alcohol if using.
  6. Let the eggnog cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  7. Ladle the eggnog into cups, garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg, and enjoy the festive cheer!
