Ingredients:
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 cup dark rum or bourbon (optional)
Instructions:
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs and sugar until the mixture is pale and creamy.
- In a saucepan, combine the milk and heavy cream and heat over medium heat until just below a simmer.
- Gradually pour a small amount of the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture while whisking continuously to temper the eggs.
- Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens slightly (about 10 minutes).
- Remove from the heat, stir in vanilla extract, nutmeg, and alcohol if using.
- Let the eggnog cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- Ladle the eggnog into cups, garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg, and enjoy the festive cheer!
