Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, plus more to taste
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar (optional)
- Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add minced garlic and red pepper flakes (if using) and sauté until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes, being careful not to burn the garlic.
- Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste. Add dried oregano, basil, and thyme. Season with salt, pepper, and sugar. Bring to a simmer.
- Reduce heat to low, cover partially, and simmer for at least 45 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. For a richer, deeper flavor, simmer for 1-2 hours or longer, stirring occasionally.
- Taste and adjust seasonings (salt, pepper, sugar) as needed. Remove from heat and garnish with fresh basil, if desired.
