Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, plus more to taste
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar (optional)
  • Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add minced garlic and red pepper flakes (if using) and sauté until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes, being careful not to burn the garlic.
  2. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste. Add dried oregano, basil, and thyme. Season with salt, pepper, and sugar. Bring to a simmer.
  3. Reduce heat to low, cover partially, and simmer for at least 45 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. For a richer, deeper flavor, simmer for 1-2 hours or longer, stirring occasionally.
  4. Taste and adjust seasonings (salt, pepper, sugar) as needed. Remove from heat and garnish with fresh basil, if desired.
