Ingredients:
- 2 oz (60 ml) bourbon or rye whiskey
- 1 sugar cube (or 1/2 teaspoon granulated sugar)
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- A few drops of plain water
- Ice cubes (preferably one large cube)
- Orange peel (for garnish)
- Maraschino cherry (for garnish, optional)
- A dash of club soda (optional)
Instructions:
- Add the sugar cube to the bottom of the old fashioned glass.
- Douse the sugar cube with a few drops of water and add two dashes of Angostura bitters.
- Use a muddler or the back of a spoon to gently press the sugar and bitters together, dissolving the sugar.
- Pour in the bourbon or rye whiskey over the muddled mixture.
- Add one large ice cube or a few smaller ones to the glass.
- Using a bar spoon, stir the cocktail for about 15 seconds to chill and dilute slightly.
- Express the oils from an orange peel over the drink, then place it in the glass. Optionally, add a maraschino cherry for a touch of colour.
