Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup (60g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup (120ml) water
- Pinch of salt
- 3 cups (720ml) whole milk
- 4 ounces (115g) good quality semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
- 2 tablespoons (30ml) chocolate syrup
- 2 tablespoons (30ml) strong brewed coffee, cooled
- 2 cups ice cubes
- Whipped cream (optional)
- Chocolate shavings (optional)
- Maraschino cherries (optional)
- Chocolate sauce (optional)
Instructions:
- In a saucepan, combine sugar, cocoa powder, water, and salt. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, whisking constantly, until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is smooth. Let cool slightly.
- Gently melt the chopped chocolate in a double boiler or microwave, stirring until smooth. Be careful not to burn it!
- In a blender, combine the milk, melted chocolate, chocolate syrup, and coffee.
- Add the ice cubes to the blender.
- Blend until completely smooth and slushy. You might need to stop and scrape down the sides of the blender a few times.
- For a thicker shake transfer to a freezer proof container and freeze for 2-3 hours. Blend again until slushy.
- Pour into tall glasses. Top with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, and a maraschino cherry, if desired. Enjoy your frozen hot chocolate.
