Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (60g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) water
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3 cups (720ml) whole milk
  • 4 ounces (115g) good quality semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) chocolate syrup
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) strong brewed coffee, cooled
  • 2 cups ice cubes
  • Whipped cream (optional)
  • Chocolate shavings (optional)
  • Maraschino cherries (optional)
  • Chocolate sauce (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a saucepan, combine sugar, cocoa powder, water, and salt. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, whisking constantly, until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is smooth. Let cool slightly.
  2. Gently melt the chopped chocolate in a double boiler or microwave, stirring until smooth. Be careful not to burn it!
  3. In a blender, combine the milk, melted chocolate, chocolate syrup, and coffee.
  4. Add the ice cubes to the blender.
  5. Blend until completely smooth and slushy. You might need to stop and scrape down the sides of the blender a few times.
  6. For a thicker shake transfer to a freezer proof container and freeze for 2-3 hours. Blend again until slushy.
  7. Pour into tall glasses. Top with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, and a maraschino cherry, if desired. Enjoy your frozen hot chocolate.
