Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks or 226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3-4 cups (360-480g) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) heavy cream or whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) pure vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1. In a stand mixer (or with an electric hand mixer), beat the softened butter on medium speed until light and fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  2. Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating on low speed to avoid a sugar cloud. Scrape down the sides of the bowl after each addition.
  3. Add the heavy cream (or milk), vanilla extract, and salt. Beat on medium speed until combined and smooth.
  4. If the frosting is too thick, add more heavy cream, 1 tablespoon at a time, until desired consistency is reached. If the frosting is too thin, add more powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time.
  5. Beat on medium-high speed for 1-2 minutes, until the frosting is light and airy.
  6. For firmer frosting, chill for 15 minutes before using (optional).
