Ingredients:

  • 6-8 medium apples (such as Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Gala), peeled, cored, and sliced (approx. 1.3 kg)
  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon (5ml) ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2.5ml) ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1.25ml) ground cloves
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) water
  • 1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (90g) rolled oats (not instant)
  • 3/4 cup (150g) packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2.5ml) ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1.25ml) salt
  • 1/2 cup (113g) cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Toss to coat evenly.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and water until smooth.
  3. Pour the cornstarch slurry over the apple mixture and toss to combine.
  4. Pour the apple mixture into the slow cooker, spreading it evenly.
  5. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  6. Cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  7. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple mixture in the slow cooker.
  8. Cover and cook on low for 3-4 hours or on high for 1.5-2 hours, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.
