Ingredients:
- 1 cup (2 sticks/227g) unsalted butter, softened
- 3-4 cups (360-480g) powdered sugar, sifted
- 1/4 cup (60ml) milk or heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Instructions:
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy (about 3-5 minutes). The butter should be noticeably lighter in color and texture.
- Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating on low speed after each addition. Start with 3 cups and add more to reach your desired consistency.
- Add the milk (or cream), vanilla extract, and salt. Beat on medium speed until smooth and creamy. If the frosting is too thick, add more milk, a teaspoon at a time. If it's too thin, add more powdered sugar, a tablespoon at a time.
- Increase the mixer speed to high and beat for 1-2 minutes until the frosting is light and airy. The frosting should become noticeably lighter and more voluminous.
- Taste and adjust sweetness, vanilla flavor, or consistency as needed. Add a drop or two of food coloring at this stage if desired.
