Ingredients:

  • 2 fluid ounces (60 ml) vodka
  • 1 fluid ounce (30 ml) freshly brewed espresso, cooled
  • ¾ fluid ounce (22 ml) coffee liqueur (Kahlua or Tia Maria preferred)
  • ½ fluid ounce (15 ml) simple syrup
  • Ice cubes
  • ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar (for simple syrup)
  • ½ cup (120ml) water (for simple syrup)
  • 3 coffee beans (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Make the Simple Syrup (if needed): Combine sugar and water in a small saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves completely. Let cool completely. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  2. Chill the Glass: Place your martini or coupe glass in the freezer for a few minutes to chill.
  3. Prepare the Espresso: Brew a strong shot of espresso using your preferred method. Allow it to cool slightly while you prepare the other ingredients. Alternative: Use cold brew concentrate.
  4. Combine Ingredients: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the vodka, cooled espresso, coffee liqueur, and simple syrup.
  5. Shake Vigorously: Close the shaker tightly and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds, until the shaker is very cold. This chills the drink and creates that lovely foamy top.
  6. Strain and Serve: Double strain the cocktail (using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine-mesh sieve for the cleanest pour) into the chilled glass.
  7. Garnish: Garnish with three coffee beans placed gently on top of the foam.
