Ingredients:
- 1 cup (240ml) whole milk
- 1 ½ cups (300g) granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon (1.5g) salt
- 4 tablespoons (57g) unsalted butter, softened
- 2 teaspoons (10ml) pure vanilla extract
- 3 tablespoons (30g) all-purpose flour
Instructions:
- In the saucepan, whisk together the milk, sugar, salt, and flour until smooth, ensuring no lumps remain.
- Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly with the whisk, until the mixture thickens to a pudding-like consistency. It should coat the back of a spoon. This takes about 5-7 minutes. Watch carefully to avoid scorching!
- Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the softened butter and vanilla extract until fully incorporated.
- Pour the frosting into a heatproof bowl and cover the surface directly with plastic wrap (this prevents a skin from forming). Let it cool completely to room temperature, about 1 hour.
- Once cooled, use an electric mixer (either stand or hand mixer) to whip the frosting until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
