Ingredients:

  • 1 kg cooking apples, such as Bramley apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 50g granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 200g all-purpose flour
  • 100g unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 100g light brown sugar
  • 50g rolled oats (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Peel, core, and chop the apples. Toss with lemon juice to prevent browning.
  2. In a saucepan, combine the chopped apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and water. Cook over medium heat until the apples are slightly softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Transfer the cooked apple filling to a prepared baking dish.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, rub the cold, cubed butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Stir in the light brown sugar and oats (if using).
  5. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling. Bake in a preheated oven at 190°C (375°F, Gas Mark 5) for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  6. Let the crumble cool slightly before serving.
