Ingredients:
- 1 kg cooking apples, such as Bramley apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
- 50g granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 tbsp water
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 200g all-purpose flour
- 100g unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 100g light brown sugar
- 50g rolled oats (optional)
Instructions:
- Peel, core, and chop the apples. Toss with lemon juice to prevent browning.
- In a saucepan, combine the chopped apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and water. Cook over medium heat until the apples are slightly softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Transfer the cooked apple filling to a prepared baking dish.
- In a large mixing bowl, rub the cold, cubed butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Stir in the light brown sugar and oats (if using).
- Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling. Bake in a preheated oven at 190°C (375°F, Gas Mark 5) for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
- Let the crumble cool slightly before serving.
